Summary

Wildland fires are expected to increase in prevalence in the coming decades and will have a significant and growing impact on human health, safety, and property. The impacts on air quality can be enormous and extend over very large distances, and human lives and property are affected at the wildland urban interface. An important contributor to the rapid spread of many large fires is the ignition of fresh fuel by firebrands that break away from burning vegetation and structures.
